Amelia Island resident, Jacksonville native and retired J.C. Penney executive DAVID F. MILLER SR. received the Kinne Free Enterprise Award during Jacksonville University's 13th Col. Harry L. Kinne Free Enterprise Award luncheon May 17.

Miller was one of two business leaders with ties to the university honored. JU alumnus Robert L. Turknett, chief executive officer of Turknett Leadership Group in Atlanta, received the first-ever Entrepreneurial Leadership Award.

JU Chancellor Emeritus Frances Bartlett Kinne presented the award, established in honor of her late husband in 1986, to Miller. The award honors individuals committed to the American ideals of free enterprise and independent higher education.

Miller retired in 1990 after a 37-year career with J.C. Penney Co. He started with the company as a salesman, then advanced rapidly through merchandising and regional positions. In 1983, he was elected a director of the company and president of J.C. Penney Stores and Catalog. He was later elected vice chairman of the board and chief operating officer.

He has a bachelor's in business from the University of Florida, where he participated in the ROTC program. He also served two years in the Air Force. He has served on the boards of several local organizations including JU, Florida Community College at Jacksonville and Winn-Dixie. He serves on the Advisory Board of the David F. …
