Capturing the Imagination

Article excerpt

Today we introduce the first three members of the judging panel for The Journal's third Landmark Awards.

The awards, which are in partnership with Newcastle law firm Watson Burton LLP, last year lauded international music centre the Sage Gateshead as 2005's Landmark of the Year.

The regional building excellence awards, which are also supported by surveyor GVA Lamb & Edge and Allied Irish Bank (GB), were introduced two years ago to reward those developments which highlight the best in concept, design and construction.

This year's judging panel is again made up of some of the most experienced property professionals in the North-East, who will be looking for entries which have enhanced the region.

For each of the five categories, the panel will select one winner, with the architect, developer and contractor for the winning project each receiving an award. The categories are: Retail/Leisure; Office Development; Environmental; Public Sector and Residential Development. There will also be an overall North-East Landmark of the Year Award, which the judging panel will select from one of the five winners.

Richard Freeman-Wallace, head of property at Watson Burton and member of the judging panel, said: "There was again strong competition in all categories last year for these significant property awards, which have captured the imagination of the region's property industry.

"Watson Burton is delighted to have initiated the Landmark scheme, and to have had the active support of The Journal, whose backing makes a tremendous difference.

"Sponsorship from GVA Lamb & Edge and Allied Irish Bank (GB) is equally appreciated.

"The Landmark Awards reward the people who make a long-term difference to the places in which we live and work. Their talent keeps the region's buildings looking distinctive, purposeful and stylish."

Entry is open to developments within The Journal and Evening Gazette circulation areas, which will have been completed between August 16, 2005, and August 16, 2006.

The awards will culminate in a black-tie event at The Hilton Newcastle Gateshead on Thursday, October 19.
