What They Said

Rio ferdinand: "What can you say? I saw him go down and thought he'd probably be up in the next five minutes, that he'd twisted his ankle slightly or something. To go in and find out he'd done his cruciate ligaments, was devastating for him and very disappointing for the rest of the team as well. We've got our fingers crossed for him."

DAVID BECKHAM (right): "I think we're all feeling for Michael. As a team we've done what we wanted, but to lose Michael is devastating for everyone and the team.

GRAEME SOUNESS: "It is an absolute tragedy for the boy and equally it's an absolute nightmare for Newcastle United and Glenn Roeder. In the 10 games I had him last season, Michael scored seven goals, we won seven, drew one and lost two. That is how good a player he is and it is how important he is for Newcastle United. It's dreadful luck for Michael, but if you look back, players have come back from two serious injuries before and have been fine. I'm sure that will be the same for Michael. …
