A man was arrested yesterday after three armed robberies in Newcastle city centre within hours.

The 35-year-old, of North Shields, was arrested by detectives investigating raids on Wednesday at William Hill bookmaker's in the Bigg Market at 12.37pm, at Thomson Travel in Northumberland Street at 2.09pm and less than an hour later at the Woolwich Building Society in Pilgrim Street.

Flood chaos

DRIVERS were greeted with chaos yesterday when a water main burst.

Water poured from the burst pipe on a sliproad off the A1231 near the junction with Castletown Way and Riverside Road, Sunderland, at 9.50am.

Police cordoned off both lanes for most of the day.

Refugee support
