Sven-Goran Eriksson thanked Michael Owen for his service to England as the injured striker bid an emotional farewell.

Owen flew home on Wednesday after suffering a serious knee injury against Sweden on Tuesday night.

The Newcastle striker has scored 28 goals for Eriksson during his time as England boss, including a memorable hat-trick against Germany in Munich in 2001.

Eriksson, who leaves the job after the World Cup, said: "Of course it was emotional. It was emotional for everybody.

"I thanked him for what he has done for England and for me for the last five and a half years.

"Everybody said goodbye. Not as a group but individually. I'm sure he will do everything to come back to the level he is or has been at before the injury."

Owen, aged 26, scored 36 goals in 80 games for England and looked set to beat Sir Bobby Charlton's all-time goal record of 49.

He could be out of the game for up to a year with his ruptured cruciate ligaments but Eriksson insists he can still become England's greatest goalscorer. …
