THE [pounds sterling]150 million redevelopment of Smithfield Market was today thrown into chaos after the government ruled it should face a major public inquiry.

Plans for a massive flat-fronted steel and glass building to replace the derelict General Market have now been put on ice with the inquiry likely to prevent any work starting until late next year.

The project, which would also see the unlisted western market turned into offices and an "urban market hall", had looked set for the green light after being approved by the City of London Corporation-last month. But the intervention of planning minister Ruth Kelly has thrown the whole scheme into doubt.

It is understood Ms Kelly decided to force the redevelopment through a public inquiry after a series of high-profile objections to the plans.

The proposed scheme, designed by architects Kohn Pederson Fox, is opposed by Prince Charles, English Heritage and conservation group SAVE. …
