The vibrancy of the business community has been demonstrated at the North East (NO HYPHEN) Business Awards. Here Helen Logan takes a look at the innovative and ambitious organisations which took the top titles.

A North-East college took the highest honour, thanks to its outstanding performance and go-ahead investment plans. Newcastle College, which has 44,000 students, has been crowned Company of the Year at the North East Business Awards, which are organised by The Journal and Evening Gazette.

The award winners proved a rich mix, blending the best of the past with new opportunities for the future.

Newcastle College, which is one of the region's largest employers, has achieved huge growth in the past five years and is now one of the top-performing colleges in the UK.

Recent investment of pounds 40m in the campus and a planned additional pounds 120m have helped the college achieve developments such as a pounds 21m Performance Academy for music and performing-art students and a new pounds 16m Lifestyle Academy for beauty, sport, hospitality and tourism students, which will open in September. …
