Sustainable Development at the Heart of BASF's Philosophy

Basf at Seal Sands has been committed to the North-East for more than 20 years. Its concern with sustainable development is a concern for every industry; not just the chemical industry.

BASF has a very strong commitment to sustainable development, and in fact leads the way in global policies.

Implementation of the company's commitment to sustainable development involves every aspect of the business and at Seal Sands this has been accomplished through numerous initiatives.

Employees have supported the BASF sustainable development programme by being involved in the Integrated Community Programme. This programme was developed back in 2001 and was designed to re-establish the links with the local Tees Valley community at many levels.

This includes schools, universities, local hospitals, emergency services, MPs and MEPs, local community groups, local Government and authorities, Tees Valley organisations, fellow neighbours in the chemical industry, environmental groups, wildlife trusts and of course, the local media.

There is a danger after an initiative such as the Integrated Community Programme is launched that momentum slows down, and the interest is lost.

However, BASF employees are still committed to the plan, and are involved with various community programmes across the Tees Valley region.

Such projects include Children Challenging Industry, a UK Chemical Industry Association (CIA) project co-ordinated locally.

Children as young as nine-years-old visit the site and see first hand what happens at BASF, Seal Sands. They also have an opportunity to question the Site Director.

The Children Challenging Industry programme is a superb way of changing the culture and perception of the chemical industry.

The site also has been involved, along with other chemical companies, with the syllabus and start up of the Chemical Technology Foundation Degree at the University of Teesside. …
