Sports fans will get the best of both worlds on Saturday [July 1] when England's World Cup clash with Portugal is shown on giant screens at the Northumberland Plate Festival.

Crowds of 25,000 are expected for the keenly anticipated 126th John Smith's Northumberland Plate, considered the North-East's best-loved racing and social occasion.

And if there were any fans torn between Plate Day and England's crucial quarter-final in Germany, they need not have worried as three huge TV screens have been moved into Newcastle Racecourse, so no-one will miss any of the action.

Half the 300 televisions around the racecourse at Gosforth Park will also be showing the big game.

Newcastle Racecourse executive director David Williamson said: "There is no way we were going to go up against England's quarter final in the World Cup, so we decided to race alongside it.

"It's the first time we've had three big screens and it should mean everybody can see the match. …
