Gareth Southgate today stressed his determination to snap up more new faces to follow Robert Huth into the Boro squad.

The big German defender has not yet put pen to paper on a contract, but Southgate expects Huth to fly in for medicals as soon as the World Cup is over.

Southgate told the Evening Gazette: "We have agreed everything with Robert and with Chelsea.

"We would have liked to have had it all put to bed by this stage, but it's because of the logistics of the World Cup that we haven't been able to complete the medicals or get the contract done.

"But it's not an issue. Robert is in a training camp with the German squad and we'll get it done as soon as the competition is over.

"I have spoken to Robert and he has made his decision."

Southgate's next major task is to try to lock in on action man Steed Malbranque.

Boro officials have been in negotiations with Fulham and are believed to have made significant progress.

Boro need to agree a fee with Fulham before they can gain permission to talk to the highly rated French midfielder.

It is believed that Craven Cottage boss Chris Coleman is seeking a fee of pounds 4m-plus for the 26-year-old, who is officially on the transfer list.

Southgate is also spreading his net in the search for a second central defender, after cooling his interest in the American player Oguchi Onyewu, who had an indifferent World Cup.

The Boro boss is keen to bring in a second defender because he intends to hang up his boots and concentrate on management.

Southgate said: "There are particular positions I want to strengthen but I have to be absolutely certain that I will be bringing in the right kind of player to the club.

"We already have cover in every position, and any signings I make must be players who are capable of going straight into the first team. …
