Your hair can become like straw in the heat. Experts reveal their tips on protecting your barnet from the summer sun.

Sun, sea and swimming may be good for lifting the spirits, but they're not so great for our hair.

The nightmare begins as sand, sea-water and chlorine combine to damage locks, stripping it of moisture and causing it to become dehydrated and coarse.

The hair's pigments can also be damaged by the elements, with daily sun exposure making your hair lose its vitality, shine and colour.

Worst of all, you don't even have to be near the coast for hair to be affected.

"Pollution and air-conditioning dehydrate hair and make it static, while smog kills shine," says Jake Davis, senior stylist at John Frieda.

"During the heat of the summer, our hair needs some help to boost its gloss and shine. Protect your hair by using products that coat it and create a barrier against heat, pollution and UV rays."

Caring for colours

"Both natural and colour treated hair will fade and get damaged in the same way. However, colour treated hair will fade much more rapidly," Jake says.

"Salt water is abrasive and damaging. Any colour that sits on hair will be taken off very easily."

Kerastase Soleil, from pounds 11 (0800 316-4400), is designed to protect and repair coloured hair. There's a shampoo, repairing gel masque, glossing serum, leave-in finish spray and leave-in gel-creme to apply before swimming. Schwarzkopf BC Bonacure Sun Guardian range will shield hair during hot days. Spritz on UV Protection Spray, pounds 10.30, (01296 314 000), and the After-Sun Treatment, pounds 8.55, will get it looking luscious in no time. Senscience's True Hue Colour Protecting Treatment, pounds 18 for 18 capsules (01282 683 100), seals in hair colour.

Straight styles

Don't think you can take things easy if you sport straight hair.

The warm weather will dry out hair so it's important to protect against additional when you are styling with straighteners or a hair dryer, says Lisa.
