Tracey Watts, a nursery assistant at Tiny Turners, Marton, Middlesbrough, has two children, Emily, 13, and Benjamin, ten.

"This is a difficult situation for both mum and daughter and thankfully one I've never been in.

"The first and most important thing is to let your daughter know none of this is her fault and it's nothing to do with her when he doesn't turn up.

"I know that the mum doesn't want to see her ex but I think she needs to put on a front and speak to him on his own and explain to him the effects that it is having on their daughter. He has to turn up when he says he will and be reliable.

"Then suggest a family meeting between the three of them, preferably somewhere neutral where dad and daughter can meet but mum is on stand-by."

John Whisson, of Normanby, pictured, is a lecturer at Teesside University and dad to Sophie, 15, and Paul, 13.
