Only two sides won in Saturday's rain-affected Foster's Northumberland and Tyneside Senior League programme.

Greenside, battling to retain their Division A1 status after winning promotion last season, proved too strong for Ponteland following a high-scoring game which produced almost 500 runs.

Mark Rowell (84) and Paul Carrick with 45 top-performed leading Greenside to the impressive total of 268.

There was an early double blow for Ponteland but their hopes were raised by Malcolm Clarke and Stephen Taylor (76). The pair were involved in a big century partnership but when Taylor became one of Carrick's five victims and Clarke was stumped after making 97, the visitors were all out for 226.

Carrick ended with five wickets for 55 runs and he was helped in the attack by Glyn Taylor with figures of 3-61.

Annfield Plain were equally impressive defeating Shotley Bridge. Graeme Carr (30) and Rehan Rafique, whose 93 included a couple of sixes and 12 boundaries, gave the innings a platform on which to build a big total.

The momentum was maintained by the former Durham County player Martin Speight who had a six and nine fours out of 63 and John Newstead with 31.

Donald Brown took 6-85 in 15 overs but the Bridge still faced a target of 265. They never threatened and when David Maughan took 5-43 in 14.3 overs and Saquib Khan claimed three wickets, they were all out for 152.

Bottom-of-the-table Ashington drew their match at Swalwell where the scores were identical at close of play. Required to score 178, Swalwell were all out for 177 which included an unbeaten 91 by Ian Pattison batting at number three.

David Rutherford (61) and Paul Straker (40) were both run out and were the mainstays of the Ashington innings which produced 177 for eight.

Newcastle City still lead the table despite their fixture with Leadgate ending prematurely. …
