We are led to believe our future lies in a prosperous city-region within a valley. Already we are seeing bustling commuter traffic. Just like the famous swirling metropolis' of the western world, we have super congested roads.

On a recent trip to Toronto and Vancouver, a fundamental difference struck me. It was their outstanding public transport and the fact posh people go to work on the bus!

In these progressive cities with populations of millions, not taking the car is not just the environmentally essential thing to do, it is the only practical thing to do.

These cities can only function because of modern integrated public transport and the great many people who get around by bike, roller blades or two feet.

Electric trams (like those we lost in the 1920s), electric trolley buses (like those we lost in the 1970s), as well as light rail (like those we were merely talking about in the 1970s) and subway trains (so clean you could eat your dinner off them) are efficient and every two minutes. …
