Bringing the Outdoors in; Now's the Time for a Garden Extension. Fay Sweet Explains How to Go about It

MORE space, more light, more time to enjoy the garden. It is the summer trinity that many homeowners dream of when adding a garden extension.

To realise those dreams, increasing numbers of people are turning to architects for bespoke solutions.

"We all want space that's functional, ergonomic and beautiful," says architect Senka Vranicki, who specialises in domestic projects.

She stresses the importance of taking time to consider how the new area will work with the rest of the property. "Any new extension will take you closer to the garden, but it will also make the heart of the home darker. Where possible, we suggest adding rooflights so that sunlight falls into the centre of the space."

She also advises that, particularly if the new interior is open-plan, special attention be paid to artificial lighting.

"Use separate lighting controls for the cooking, dining and living areas."

And there is the all-important blurring of boundaries. The most successful designs feature flooring materials and levels that flow seamlessly from inside to out and doors that slide or fold back.

'It works because it is so well designed'

WHEN Nicole Guerretta and Brad Fairhead started to discuss the extension for their garden flat, as part of the design equation they found themselves describing their social life, musical tastes and even the type of olive oil they used.

"Here was an opportunity for a space to be completely tailor-made," says the project's architect Senka Vranicki. The new open-plan space includes a large living and dining area plus a kitchen to one side.

Nicole says: "I love my 'godsend' cupboards, where I can now find everything - it works efficiently because it is so well designed."
