A motorist who attacked a pedestrian with a steering lock has been jailed.

Paul Jeffels, 23, had two previous convictions for violence in the same six-month period when he claimed he was depressed over the breakdown of a relationship.

He had been driving down Loftus Bank in East Cleveland when he spotted Daniel Fenby-Dixon walking to a gym.

He stopped his grey Vauxhall Nova and jumped out shouting "What are you staring at my car for?"

Jeffels held him down shouting "Get the iron bar" and he felt two blows to the top of his head. The victim saw a woman holding a two-foot metal bar, and then Jeffels swung it at him, said prosecutor Yvonne Taylor.

Mr Fenby-Dixon managed to back away and use his mobile phone to contact his partner's stepfather. He was collected by a family member and driven to Loftus police station, and then taken to Brotton Hospital and on to James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough.

Police later arrested Jeffels and his then girlfriend 20-year-old Lindsay Holliday. …
