Workers at a Teesside oil plant have been offered counselling after a flash fire which left two men fighting for their lives.

The men, one in his 50s and one in his 30s, received first degree electrical burns in the fire at the ConocoPhillips site at Seal Sands on Wednesday.

Doctors at the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle are closely monitoring the workers - who haven't been named - and it is believed their families are at their bedsides. They suffered horrific burns to the head, neck and chest in the incident in an electrical sub-station on the site at 2.30pm.

A spokeswoman at the Newcastle RVI described their condition earlier today as "critical with no change overnight".

A flash fire is an unexpected and sudden intense fire with extremely high temperatures. Firefighters from Cleveland Fire Brigade and from the site extinguished the fire and made the site safe.

The Health and Safety Executive has launched a probe and inspectors were on site yesterday to start the investigation. …
