All the statistics point to Tiger Woods going on to win the Open at Hoylake.

But Ernie Els today had the chance to turn those statistics on their head by getting in front of the defending champion by the end of play tonight.

Woods has won all six of the majors he has led at the halfway stage, and all 10 of his titles have come when he has been in the lead with a round to play.

The world No 1 has never come from behind on the final day to win however, and Els went into today's third round right on Tiger's tail.

Woods looked to have stamped his authority on the field with a superb 65 for a 12-under halfway total, but Els responded with a flawless 65 of his own to finish just one shot back.
