John Abdullah says that taking up gardening at his home in Howdon, Wallsend, has helped him recover from pancreatitis, which is associated with chronic alcoholism.

John, 44, admits he was an alcoholic, but now instead of drinking he is trying to make his garden into a haven.

It was last year that John was told to stop drinking and that's when he decided to pour his energies into a more healthy pastime. John doesn't have a job and he's able to devote all his time to the garden while his wife, Denise, 39, works as a bookmaker.

John is very proud of his garden, which he works on every day with a bit of help from friends and neighbours.

One of his pride and joys is a Canadian flax in his front garden that has surprised even him by growing 6ft tall, and is now flowering.

He is still busy improving the back garden and plans to introduce an aviary at some point next year
