Rev. Coleman, a native of Daytona Beach, moved with his family to Jacksonville in 1932 as a toddler when his father, the Rev. A.B. Coleman Sr., became pastor of Shiloh Metropolitan Baptist Church.

A 1946 graduate of Stanton High School, he received a bachelor's degree in biology from Benedict College in Columbia, S.C., and a bachelor of divinity degree from Luther Rice Seminary in Jacksonville.

He founded his funeral business, A.B. Coleman Mortuary and Cremation Service, in 1982. The business will be carried on by his two children, who also are licensed funeral directors.

In an interview with the Times-Union in 1988, Rev. Coleman said his funeral business had grown into a successful enterprise because he cared about people and wanted to perform the best service for them. …
