Steve Hughes test drives the Mazda6 MPS

Most aspiring junior executives find it difficult to see further than the current crop of German premium cars, yet there are viable alternatives.

They include capable rivals such as the Mazda 6 MPS, which not only boasts plenty of power but is every inch a driver's car too.

It combines the power of a 2.3-litre turbocharged engine with the tenacious grip of four wheel drive and the interior luxury of a car costing much, much more.

At pounds 23,995 the MPS version of the Mazda 6 saloon is roughly the same price as a mid-range Audi A4, except that it offers an unrivalled power output of 260bhp.

It is the fastest saloon ever built by the Japanese car company and scorches to 60mph in just six and a half seconds although the top speed is a relatively modest 149mph.

However, it shifts from 50mph to 75mph in just over six seconds, which means impressive overtaking prowess. The engine is linked to a six-speed manual gearbox and external identifiers include 18-inch alloy wheels, body skirts and spoilers, plus dual exhaust pipes and front fog lamps. …
