Duff's Desire Is Good for Us ( Roeder

Damien duff has already had his first disagreement with Glenn Roeder following the 3-2 friendly defeat to PSV Eindhoven ( much to the delight of the Newcastle United manager, writes Luke Edwards.

Duff made his first appearance in the black-and-white stripes on Saturday following his pounds 5m switch from Chelsea but the Republic of Ireland international admitted he had been frustrated by Roeder's decision to replace him on the hour mark with Albert Luque.

The 27-year-old (pictured left) showed enough flashes of brilliance to suggest he will quickly become a crowd favourite at St James's Park and, having had his first taste of life at his new club, the former Blackburn star admitted he had not wanted it to end. And Roeder was clearly thrilled to see the hunger and determination of his first signing as he predicted the player would help spark a successful new era at St James's Park.

"Damien was unhappy when he came off and that says a lot to me," said Roeder, who is confident he will be able to complete his second signing of the summer in the next few days. "Though he was tired, and I have to make a call on that because I have to think of his long-term condition, he was disappointed to come off.

"That sums him up. He is a winner and that sort of attitude will rub off on others because he does everything with a bounce in his stride. He is so enthusiastic. I'm sure he can become a crowd favourite.

"It is refreshing that there are still players around who are willing to move from a club where they were guaranteed medals so that they can play in a team which is looking to improve, looking to be progressive and trying to have a top-five or six finish this year.

"We need him in our aims for a top-six finish and of course for that elusive first piece of silverware. We are capable of that and it's good we have a player like that."

Despite having only trained with his new team-mates for a couple of days, Duff was quickly into the groove, sending a series of teasing crosses across the face of goal. …
