Cats in Talks to Sign Up Horsfield

Niall Quinn is hoping to open contract talks with Geoff Horsfield within the next 48 hours as he attempts to strengthen his first-team squad ahead of Sunderland's Coca-Cola Championship opener at the Ricoh Arena.

And the situation will be monitored with interest by the club's first opponents of the season, with Coventry boss Micky Adams reported to be preparing to table a bid for Kevin Kyle.

The Black Cats will be without Christian Bassila when they travel to the East Midlands this weekend after the French midfielder exercised a clause in his contract to join the Greek club Larisa on a free transfer last night.

Quinn will be more concerned with attempting to add to his playing staff and is determined to make a breakthrough this week. Horsfield has emerged as a strong candidate to join the Black Cats having fallen out with Neil Warnock less than six months after joining Sheffield United.

The former Yorkshire bricklayer is being courted by several Championship clubs after being ordered to work with the Blades' youth squad on his return to pre-season training.

Having signed Rob Hulse from Leeds last month, Warnock has told Horsfield to find himself alternative employment. The much-travelled 32-year-old has already spoken to West Bromwich Albion, his former club, and is due to hold negotiations with Preston, Leeds, Cardiff and Sunderland.

Although the competition for the experienced striker's signature will be intense, Quinn will be confident he can persuade Horsfield to make Sunderland his eighth league club. And the finances at the Dubliner's disposal after the Drumaville takeover last week should give him a significant advantage.

Should Horsfield agree to join the Wearsiders, it would increase Coventry's chances of striking a deal for Kyle. …
