Countess Goes on Hunger Strike over US Embassy

A RUSSIAN countess today carried out her threat to go on hunger strike in protest at plans to fortify the US embassy in London.

Anca Vidaeff, 53, said she will go without food for "as long as it takes" to try to force diplomats and Westminster council, which has approved the [pounds sterling]6 million scheme, to back down.

She leads residents living around the Mayfair embassy who are concerned the plans will leave their homes vulnerable to a bomb attack. The countess, who lives in a six-storey Georgian townhouse opposite a side entrance to the embassy, will sit in her porch with the door open refusing anything but water.

She will not eat for at least three days but said she is prepared to extend this if officials do not start negotiations.

"I will be out there on view where everybody can see what the council and embassy have driven me to," she added. "If necessary I will keep refusing food until I become so ill they have to take me away in an ambulance. …
