Bad Debts Rise at Lloyds TSB

Lloyds tsb, Britain's fifth biggest bank, has reported a rise in profits despite a sharp increase in bad debts.

Pre-tax profits rose 4% to pounds 1.78bn for the first half of the year, helped by strong cost controls. But provisions to cover bad debts also rose. Across the group as a whole they climbed 20% to pounds 800m.

Jarvis in roads business talks

ENGINEERING firm Jarvis has said it is in talks over the possible sale of its roads business. The company posted pre-tax losses of pounds 58.2m for the year to March 31, which was in stark contrast to a pounds 391m deficit a year before.

Eurotunnel under court protection

CHANNEL Tunnel operator Eurotunnel has been granted bankruptcy protection, giving it a six-month breathing space from debt repayments. The Anglo-French firm said the Paris Commercial Court had placed it under court protection and would supervise negotiations with its creditors.
