Wadkins Emerges after Wreck on 18

Article excerpt

It was the best double bogey Bobby Wadkins ever made. The 12-foot putt on the 72nd hole of the Senior Players Championship gave him his first major title and a huge sense of relief.

After all, it was just a month ago that Phil Mickelson's double bogey on No. 18 cost him a chance to win the U.S. Open. But Jim Thorpe's three-putt bogey on the final hole at the TPC of Michigan on Sunday allowed Wadkins to escape a similar fate in Dearborn, Mich.

"Anyone who says they aren't feeling nerves at that state of the game is telling a lie," said Wadkins, who shot a 4-under 68 and was 14-under overall. "The tournament should have been over, and I almost gave it away."

Wadkins was one stroke better than Thorpe, who shot a 69 on Sunday and was the runner-up for a third time at the Senior Players.

Ponte Vedra Beach resident Fred Funk shot 2-under 70 and finished tied for 11th.

JAMIE FARR OWENS CORNING CLASSIC: Natalie Gulbis has waited 4 1/2 years for her first LPGA Tour victory. Mi Hyun Kim made her wait a little longer.

Kim rolled in an 18-foot birdie putt on the third playoff hole to beat Gulbis and win in Sylvania, Ohio. Gulbis missed a 9-footer that would have extended the playoff.

The victory was worth $180,000 to the South Korean. It was her second victory of the year and seventh in seven seasons on the tour. She also won the Ginn Clubs & Resort Open in Orlando in April.

Gulbis, who often models for magazines and calendars, is one of the tour's best-known players. Large galleries follow her every move. Still, she had never finished better than a tie for third in her five years on tour.
