Caldwell Hoping to Lead Cats Comeback

Steve caldwell is hoping he is given the captain's armband when Sunderland kick-off their season at Coventry tomorrow, (writes JAMES HUNTER).

New boss Niall Quinn will make up his mind today over who should captain the side, with Caldwell a strong contender.

Summer signing Kenny Cunningham is also an obvious candidate, but Caldwell has skippered Sunderland before and he may just have the edge over the former Republic of Ireland captain.

Caldwell, who will have to recover from a slight calf strain in time to play tomorrow, said: "I don't know what the gaffer's going to do now that Gary Breen has left.

"Being skipper is something I would be very proud to do.

"It is not the be all and end all for me and it wouldn't change my game.

"I would relish the responsibility and I would like the job, but the gaffer will decide that, and if it goes to someone else then I'll get on with my job as I always have.

"You need leadership all over the pitch, regardless of who has the armband. …
