Apprentice Steve Donohoe showed a good turn of foot to get to Chester and his efforts were rewarded with victory on The Kiddykid in the Listed Red Corner Events Queensferry Stakes.

The David Evans-trained six-year-old quickened to lead a furlong out in the six-furlong dash and Donohoe kept him going to hold off the closing pack, with Beckermet and Indian Maiden finishing strongly to take second and third, a head and a length adrift respectively.

Donohoe said: "The M6 was closed and in the end I had to run the last four miles to the course, my girlfriend Laura drove me and she had to bring my riding gear along afterwards.

"But it was all well worth it.

"The Kiddykid was the best horse in the race and we are looking forward to the Ayr Gold Cup now."

Evans said of the 9-1 winner: "I took him out of a race at Windsor yesterday because the ground was too quick, it wasn't ideal today, but he was in such great form that I had to run him somewhere. …
