Coroner to launch hearing for tragic boy

An inquest on a boy who died in a house blaze is expected to be opened this week.

North Durham coroner Andrew Tweddle will open the hearing so the parents of four-year-old Tommy Shotton can make funeral arrangements.

The hearing will be adjourned until an investigation is completed into the tragedy at Thomas's home in Gray Terrace, New Kyo, near Stanley, Co Durham, last Thursday.

Minutes before he died, Thomas told his mother, Diane Curry: "I love you, Mammy."

Diane, 24, and her partner Michael Shotton tried desperately to save their little boy, but they were beaten back by the flames.

The distraught mother has told how she went to check on Tommy minutes before the blaze started.

Diane believes her son must have sneaked into another room after she left him.

Police officers and firefighters made repeated attempts to get to the little boy but their efforts were in vain. …
