T-YOU; Rants & Raves Roethlisberger Critics Are Missing the Point

I grew up on motorcycles, with as many as six in the family garage at one time, and we always wore helmets, whether or not it was the law. It just made sense to protect the melon.

However, it's upsetting to hear the sanctimonious criticism of Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, especially when it misses the mark. Specifically, I'm speaking about an analogy made by Jim Rome on his ESPN show, comparing riding a motorcycle to playing football. Surely we could come up with a more applicable analogy.

While riding a motorcycle, one can fully expect, and should work diligently to realize, a pristine helmet at the end of the ride -- no scratches, no scuffs, only a little dirt from the road. Do you remember how football helmets look at the end of a game? Sometimes you would think somebody had died in the things, the way they look.

The point isn't the final condition of the melon bowl, but of the melon itself, and common sense tells us that protection is better than none. …
