Volunteers fighting obesity by helping encourage more than a million people to take up walking were given a special thank you yesterday. [Thurs]

More than 100 walkers from Northumberland were invited to Kirkharle Hall in Kirkwhelpington for a day of activities including map reading, a heritage walk and a treasure hunt.

The day was organised by the Countryside Agency to reward the support that walking groups in the North-East have given to the Walking the Way to Health initiative.

The scheme, jointly organised by the Countryside Agency and British Heart Foundation, has helped create 350 walking groups in the UK and 24 in the North-East in the past six years.

Walking groups in the region have enjoyed particular success and have so far received pounds 700,000 of funding from the initiative to create walks and attract new members. Five of the groups come from Northumberland, with the Berwick-Upon-Tweed walkers alone offering both long and short treks weekly from Wooler, Seahouses and Belford. …
