Rob Andrew could be on his way out of Kingston Park to take the top job in English rugby.

The Falcons manager has been shortlisted along with World Cup-winning coach Clive Woodward for the new post of England's elite director of rugby.

Andrew has refused to comment on suggestions he is favourite for the job ( or even if he has been interviewed ( and Falcons owner David Thompson (pictured right) is silent on the issue.

The Falcons have called off today's media event, when they had intended to introduce the current Newcastle squad.

Andrew, Jonny Wilkinson and Matt Burke were to have been available for interview.

Club officials feel the "intense media speculation" over the England post would detract from the purpose of the day. They have put back the pre-season Press open day until August 22.

The Rugby Football Union, meanwhile, could make a decision on who has got the job this week.

The four-man panel who will make the appointment - RFU chairman Martyn Thomas, chief executive Francis Baron and former England captains Bill Beaumont and John Spencer - are to meet today or tomorrow on Baron's return from holiday. Andrew has a good relationship with the 12 Premiership clubs and Spencer is said to be in his corner while Beaumont is reckoned to be backing Woodward.

It is not known who Thomas and Baron are backing.

If Andrew was given the job he would be seen as the man to restore the RFU's relationship with the Premiership clubs, which has been in turmoil for years.

Thompson has told Andrew Newcastle would not stand in his way if he was offered ( and wanted ( the England job.

The former England fly-half has been in charge of the Falcons for 10 years. They have won a league title, two national cups, reached three European Challenge Cup semi-finals and the quarter-finals of the Heineken European Cup. …
