Kenny cunningham knows it is time for Sunderland's players to stand up and be counted after slipping to a third straight defeat this season.

The Black Cats squandered the early lead given to them by Daryl Murphy and lost 3-2 to Plymouth, leaving the club fourth-bottom of the Championship and with no points from their first three games.

Cunningham, however, insists he and his team-mates have to take responsibility for their poor start and concentrate on turning things round.

He said: "That is three games and three defeats now and we are nine points behind the leaders already.

"We cannot let that gap become any bigger. We have to start winning and winning soon.

"We know we will take a lot of criticism after this performance ( and rightly so ( but we have to take it on the chin.

"You have to hold your hands up and take responsibility.

"We know that was not good enough at the weekend.

"It is no good playing well in spells for 10 or 15 minutes, you have to be more consistent than that. …
