Ellis Cup

Article excerpt

Two goals from Robin Bell sent South Bank into the final of the Ellis Cup yesterday. They beat Whale Hill by 2-0 in a tense semi-final at Harcourt Road.

In pouring rain a great effort by Peter Renton brought a fine save from alert Bank keeper Anthony Walker in the first minute.

Paul Barker then broke through but pulled his shot wide with keeper Mark Tempke struggling to get across.

Both sides battled for possession with Steve Dalton of Whale Hill and Paul Venis of South Bank urging on their team mates, leading by example.

The second half saw the Bank open up the Whale Hill defence several times

through Martin O'Riordan and Paul Barker. Bell headed wide from a cross by Craig McKittrick.

With the Bank on top, a through ball from Adam Livingstone found Paul Venis who slipped the ball to Bell and he made no mistake with a powerful strike from ten yards out.

Whale Hill were getting frustrated by some good defensive work by Craig McKittrick and Robert Haggath. Carl Cairns hit the bar for Whale Hill.

However it came a no surprise when Bell hit his second goal of the match picking his spot with a placed shot.

South Bank await the winners of Hardwick SC and Thornaby St Patricks in tonight's second semi final at Harcourt Road, kick off 6.30pm.
