Glenn roeder has resigned himself to starting the new Premiership season without striking reinforcements after admitting that his summer-long search for Alan Shearer's successor will not be resolved before the weekend.

The Newcastle boss was in Dublin last night to monitor Dirk Kuyt's performance for Holland against the Republic of Ireland but, with his team's opening match of the new domestic campaign just two days away, he has already selected his starting XI for Saturday's meeting with Wigan at St James's Park.

It will be a United side that, the fragile fitness of Damien Duff permitting, will have just one new signing to show for an frustrating summer in the footballing market place.

And with the transfer deadline now just 14 days away, Roeder will redouble his efforts at the start of next week as he attempts to finally make the breakthrough that has proved elusive for the last three months.

While he has not entirely ruled out the prospect of making a signing in the next 48 hours, a manager who must now give his full focus to preparing his players for the visit of Paul Jewell's men knows it will not happen in time for him to grant an immediate debut.

"You need a settling-in period before you come into the team," said the Magpies manager in an interview with BBC Radio Newcastle. "It (a signing) is still possible but the player would be very new to the club and would not know the other players.

"I have picked my team for Saturday already, I know who will be playing. did (make a signing), it would be terrific but if not, we will be back to work on Monday looking for those few players we need to bring in before the transfer deadline."

Roeder was determined to add to a squad stripped of the services of Shearer and Michael Owen in time for all his new signings to play a full part in the forthcoming Premiership campaign. …
