It's been well documented that Newcastle is the party city of the United Kindom.

So when the fixtures for the British Athletics League were published early in the year members of the Basingstoke and Hants Athletics Club were quick off the mark to make sure they would be in town for the final contest of the season at Gateshead International Stadium.

In the days of low-cost air travel, a number of the Hampshire-based club's athletes booked flights from Southampton to Newcastle with, of course, a two-night stay which hopefully would coincide with promotion to the second division.

Those who booked flights did so on the understanding they would still travel north even if they weren't selected for the team.

As the fixture drew ever-closer the club realised that not everyone had the foresight to book air tickets, so the rest of the squad were to travel north by mini-bus, stopping overnight in Yorkshire before moving on to Gateshead for the competition. …
