Delicious Delicacies on Our Doorsteps

Article excerpt

The North-East is full of hidden culinary gems, providing fresh, tasty and traditional foods.

And with so much in the Press about GM foods and the buying power of supermarkets, more people are turning to farm shops, organic food outlets, farmers' markets and small, quality food shops.

The beauty of farmers' markets is that they sell only locally-produced food sold by the people who produce it. Shoppers there meet the producers, they know where the food is coming from and are reassured it's fresh, local and safe.

On the second and fourth Saturday of the month, Hexham farmers' market offers a huge selection of the region's locally-produced foods.

The producers offer a mouthwatering selection of meat, game, vegetables, cheeses, pies, breads and cakes. There are also local fruits, jams and pickles, fresh herbs, soups and much more.

Historic Hexham has easily accessible parking close to the market place and frequent trains and buses. The next market will take place in the market place on August 26, from 9am until 1.30pm.

Moorhouse farm and coffee shop, on Station Road just off the A1 at Stannington Station, near Morpeth, specialises in quality Northumbrian produce. Its pork, beef and lamb is reared on its own family farm and properly matured and cut at the farm shop butchery to ensure maximum flavour. You will find an extensive range of joints, steaks, sausage and burgers as well as fresh chickens. The farm's Gold Award-winning dry cure bacon and home cured gammons are well worth the trip. Home made pies and ready meals are prepared on site, and there is also a full range of cooked meats in the well stocked deli counter.

You will also find locally grown fresh fruit and veg as well as artisan breads, fresh farm milk, smoked meats and fish, and a wide range of locally-made preserves and pickles.

The smell of freshly brewed coffee and home baking will entice you into the coffee shop where hot meals, homemade soup and sandwiches are available, along with a wide selection of cakes and afternoon tea.
