A father-of-two collapsed and died just yards from his home on an exclusive housing development yesterday.

Shocked neighbours in Haversham Park, a cul-de-sac of modern detached homes on the outskirts of Sunderland, woke to find police had cordoned off part of the road following the discovery of a man's body next to a turquoise mountain bike. It later emerged that the victim was a 46-year-old businessman and father-of-two who lived in Haversham Park.

Police were alerted by a passer-by who saw the unnamed man lying on a verge shortly after 9am yesterday.

The frantic passer-by called police and paramedics who attempted to revive him in the street before he was rushed to Sunderland Royal Infirmary while all their efforts to resuscitate him had failed.

A Northumbria Police spokesman said that the area where the body was discovered had initially been cordoned off, but following investigations the death was not being treated as suspicious. …
