Shannon Weatherston was in the back seat of a blue Ford Fiesta being driven by pregnant Natalie Spempniak, 24, when the car in front lost control.

Ms Spempniak was forced to brake sharply, but the car in front veered into them, while a following vehicle also slammed into them.

It happened on the southbound A189 just before the Moor Farm roundabout near Cramlington, Northumberland.

With one carriageway closed for roadworks, Ms Spempniak ( a family friend who is five months pregnant ( tried to brake, but ended up going into the back of the car in front. Despite wearing a seatbelt, Shannon was hurled against the metal headrest.

She was taken to North Tyneside General Hospital then transferred to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle because of the extent of her injuries.

To the relief of her mother Lesley Todd, 22, Shannon is well on the way to a full recovery after plastic surgery to her eyelid and nose following Sunday night's crash. …
