Darlington manager David Hodgson paid tribute to his defence as 10-man Quakers stunned Stoke to reach the second round of the Carling Cup.

The League Two side looked set for an uphill battle against their Championship hosts when Craig James was sent off with just 12 minutes gone.

And their task grew even more daunting when Vincent Pericard fired the Potters in front with a cross-shot into the corner.

But Carlos Logan levelled on half-time and new signing Julian Joachim blasted in a 25-yarder after the break to seal victory.

"Our defence was excellent," said Hodgson. "We've had one or two problems in that department and this will do their confidence the world of good.

"I thought Paddy Collins was outstanding, Brian Close ran his socks off, even though he hasn't played for a long time, and Darren Holloway was bang up to the mark.

"It was only ever a case of him building up his fitness, which he has started to do now. …
