Bird's Ill Wind a Boost to Diamonds

Late victories for Christian Henry and Josef Franc gave Newcastle some respectability from yesterday's trip to the Premier League leaders after all sorts of problems for their team-mates Manu Hauzinger and Jamie Robertson.

But the biggest talking point going into this evening's return fixture at Brough Park (6.30pm start) is the health of one of the Tigers' main attractions Danny Bird, rated "doubtful with a virus" by Tigers manager Stewart Dickson.

He pulled out of his last scheduled race at Ashfield despite having won all three of his previous outings. Bird is only second behind his skipper Shane Parker on Glasgow's averages so they can't book a guest if he's absent tonight, leaving the rider replacement rule as their only option. Virtually every mechanic helping the Diamonds was involved in getting Hauzinger's bike going although he still missed the opening heat and rode his own machine just once before borrowing George Stancl's spare bike twice. …
