Gateshead Harriers' Tartan Games promotion at the International Stadium was blessed with excellent weather which was reflected in the results in many of the events.

Throwing events, in particular, benefited and in the senior women's hammer competition, Gateshead's Lisa Shippen produced a superb best effort of 48:75m, an improvement of nearly two metres on her previous best figures.

And it was the same for her Gateshead team-mate Ian Burns in the senior men's javelin competition.

A good series, with five of his efforts over the 60m mark, Burns managed a best of 65:42m.

Teesside's Leslie Richards was particularly delighted with his discus performance. An excellent series with every round over 50m, he managed a best of 53:77m, not only a personal best by nearly a metre, but it also bettered the distance required for next year's European under-23 Championships.

Twenty four hours later at the UK Challenge final in Manchester, Richards improved even further to 54:24m. …
