World at a glance . A CRAZED motorist aimed his four-wheel-drive people carrier at random pedestrians killing one and leaving 13 injured during a 20-minute spree.

Omeed Popal struck a dozen times between the city of Fremont, California and San Francisco, where police eventually surrounded his battered black SUV last night. One bystander said: "Everybody started freaking out, getting out of the street. That car was like a weapon. He could have come right at us".

His first victim, a middleaged man, was thrown into a field, where he died.

Popal, 29, had been having nightmares that someone was coming to kill him, said his cousin Zargona Ramish of Fremont. "He thought the devil was coming to him," said Mrs Ramish. "He is a very good person. What's wrong with him?"

The victims are being treated in three hospitals.

Militants behead two spy suspects . MILITANTS in Pakistan beheaded an Islamic cleric and an Afghan refugee they believed were spying for the US and Afghan government.

The men's beheaded bodies were found early today, according to an intelligence official, in two villages near Miran Shah, in the tribal northwest of Pakistan, which borders Afghanistan. Notes written in the locally spoken Pashtu language were left on the bodies accusing the men of being spies.

The cleric's decapitated body was dumped on a roadside and the refugee's was found in Darpakhel, on Miran Shah's western outskirts.

Militants cut off his head and placed it on his chest, leaving a note saying "this is a gift for Karzai," referring to Afghanistan's President Hamid Karzai.
