My search for Mary Carr began 25 years ago, after the death of my father in 1982. After his death I learned there was a grandmother in England.

She was never spoken of and I had never seen her picture until after my father's death.

She worked as a domestic in 1908 in Newcastle at 3 Greenfield Place. This address is where my father was born. The birth certificate was given to me after his death.

My father emigrated to Canada in 1928 after having his schooling at Ponteland Orphanage. This was on his military service record that I got from Veterans Affairs in Canada.

He served years in the Canadian Army.

He left from Liverpool. He was signed up by the governments of Canada and England who paid passage for strong young men to come to Canada under the Harvest Act. These young men worked the farms here in Canada, as the young men that would normally been here were off fighting a war. …
