Hidden in a suburban Tyneside semi was this enormous crop of cannabis.

Worth pounds 75,000 on the streets, the drug was being cultivated in every room of the house which had been carefully adapted to aid their growth.

Ultra-violet light heaters had been installed along with extractor fans ( and this proved to be the downfall of the gang behind the Hiddleston Avenue hash farm.

Strong smells coming from the pounds 250,000 three-bedroom house in Benton, Newcastle, worried neighbours who feared a chemical spill.

They called the emergency services and police officers called to the house immediately recognised the whiff and discovered the 250 plants growing in every room.

Teacher Moira Taylor called the authorities after becoming alarmed at the smells coming from the well-cared-for home in the leafy street.

She said: "We had some suspicions because there was a lot of drilling going on through the walls and we knew they were only renting the house. It seemed like an excessive amount of drilling for a rented house.

"They were always coming and going and then over the last few months there had been a strange odour. We couldn't put our finger on it and it's got worse and worse."

Her suspicions came to a head on Wednesday night when the smell began to become unbearable.

"It was this horrible, disgusting sweet smell but I had no idea it was cannabis. It never crossed my mind but I knew something was going on."

Moira called the police and firefighters feared there may have been some kind of fumes leaking from the house.

But on arrival they recognised the unmistakable stench of cannabis and promptly broke down the door while the two occupants, thought to be Chinese or Vietnamese, escaped through a back window.
