GNER Parking Charges a Tax on Rail Travel

It can't have escaped your notice that almost since Tony Blair was but a twinkle in the Labour Party's eye (as opposed to a bit of grit in it now), we have been encouraged to get off the roads and take to public transport.

We are assuming that despite being privatised in the 1990s the railways are still considered "public transport", leaving us to ask the question: Why is it the utmost effort appears to be being taken to keep us off public transport.

Regular readers of The Journal Opinion columns will be in no doubt of our feelings on the whole public transport issue.

In brief, we don't think there is enough of it.

A few weeks ago we told you of the hike in car parking charges being increased at GNER railway stations along the East Coast Main Line, Darlington, Durham and Newcastle included. The daily charge in Newcastle went up from pounds 8 to pounds 12, for example.

Needless to say passenger watchdogs were none-too-pleased at the rise. …
