As the colours of summer start to drain away, how are we to brighten up our lives before the beautiful colours of autumn come to fruition? Clare Jobson finds out.

I'll be the first to admit it's pretty daunting decorating your home with bright colours, especially when most of us stick with palettes of whites and creams. However, if you decide on the type of look you want to work your colours into, such as modern, kitsch, eclectic, you should be able to achieve your scheme almost effortlessly.

First, you need to decide how much colour you want in your home. Do you want coloured wall coverings and paint, do you want to invest in some really iconic and stylish coloured furniture or do you just want to add accents of colour with the accessories you use?

Luckily, the way colour is working this season, you can use as little or as much colour as you want.

If you do feel adventurous enough to go for full colour, then think about how it's going to work in the space you have.

Do you benefit from lots of natural light? Are there pieces of furniture that need to go with the new look? All of these must be answered before you start bringing in a whole bunch of new colours.

A good way to start is with white walls. Yes, I know that's not exactly full-on colour, but it gives you the perfect blank canvas on which you can create your Technicolor masterpiece. And of course, once you have those white walls there is nothing stopping you adding to them, is there?

As far as your walls are concerned, you can add your colour with wallpaper, paint or indeed art. At the minute, wallpaper is probably the most popular choice, as just one or two panels can give you maximum impact with minimal effort.
