A lone gunman threatened a Post Office security van driver in a busy shopping area.

The raider struck yesterday as the man left the News 77 shop in Halewood Avenue, Kenton, Newcastle, after a delivery.

A pistol was pointed at the terrified victim and the robber threatened to shoot. He then grabbed a Post Office container and fled towards Bradwell Road, shortly after 11.30am. The container held red dye and could have activated marking the robber.

Police want to trace witnesses, especially two women at a bus stop opposite the post office, where the robber was also waiting prior to the raid.

It was the second raid where a pistol was brandished in a busy shopping and business area in Newcastle, within 24 hours.

Newcastle north police say they believe several teams of robbers may be involved in the attacks.

A robbery was bungled by bandits who fumbled a gun which went off outside the Eagle Star building, in Regent Centre, Gosforth, at noon on Tuesday. …
