A lodger has described how he came home from a night out to find his landlady dead on her living room floor.

James Wardle, 25, told a murder trial jury he went out in Stockton on the evening of February 10.

When he came home to Stirling Way, Thornaby, he found his landlady Audrey Badger, 42, on the floor.

"(Mr first thought was) that she'd had a couple too many to drink and she'd fallen asleep. I tried to wake her up," he told Teesside Crown Court.

He got no response when he shook her and realised she was dead when he touched her and she felt "cold and clammy".

Asked yesterday how he felt on this discovery, he said: "Devastated."

Ms Badger's partner Peter Wyatt, 51, denies her murder.

The prosecution say he strangled her then escaped through a kitchen window leaving her for dead in the early hours of February 11.

Prosecutor Franz Muller QC had said Ms Badger told a friend that Wyatt had tried to choke her with a scarf about a week before she died. …
