Berwick United finally claimed their first win to hoist themselves out of the basement.

The long-awaited breakthrough was achieved against fifth-placed visitors Chopwell Top Club, who had suffered only one previous defeat.

Berwick looked much more impressive on this showing, even though they finished up as marginal 4-3 victors.

They had Ian Knox bagging a brace and their other marksmen to wrap up the points were Ian Hossack and Sean Phillips. Chopwell always threatened to spoil the party but were left disappointed after having Stephen Foster (2) and Gareth Powell on target.

Leaders Gillford Park and second-placed Penrith United both won last Saturday but each had to be content with a 1-0 margin.

Gillford beat Cram-lington Town to maintain their 100% record, while Hebburn Reyrolle lost 1-0 to Penrith.

Gosforth Garnett Bohemians moved up into third by hammering Haydon Bridge United 5-0. Danny Sherwood completed his hat-trick for the winners, with further goals for Tom Skilbeck and Ian Harris. …
